Ford is America's second-biggest auto brand, and the F-Series pickup has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for over 40 consecutive years. But Ford's reliability story is more complicated than Toyota's — some models are genuinely excellent, others have well-documented and expensive problems. Here's the honest ranking.
Ford models ranked — best to buy used
1. Ford F-150 (2015–2018, 5.0L V8)The sweet spot for used F-150 buyers. The aluminum body issues from the first year (2014) were sorted. The 5.0L V8 is the most proven and reliable engine in the lineup. Avoid the 2014 first-year aluminum body and the 2021+ PowerBoost hybrid until it has more mileage data.
2. Ford Maverick (2022–2024)America's most affordable new truck, now hitting the used market. The hybrid powertrain has shown strong early reliability data. A genuinely fresh and well-thought-out truck at used prices.
3. Ford Bronco (2022–2024)After first-year delivery delays and some early issues, the Bronco settled into solid reliability by 2022. A genuinely capable off-roader with a growing parts ecosystem. Avoid 2021 delivery-year examples.
4. Ford Ranger (2019–2023)The Ranger returned to the US market in 2019 with reasonable reliability. The 2.3L EcoBoost is adequate for the size. Not as proven as the Tacoma but significantly cheaper used.
