Chevy Tahoe Used Reliability: Best Years and What Breaks
By Caropsy · July 1, 2026 · 5 min read
The Chevy Tahoe is the full-size SUV choice for buyers who need serious capability — three rows, real towing, and the presence to go with it. Reliability is acceptable but not exceptional. The AFM lifter issue that affects high-mileage Silverados applies here too, and the newer generation had a rough launch.

Best years to buy used
2015–2019 (4th gen, proven)The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 is the engine to have. By this stretch the generation had matured and complaint rates were lower than earlier years. The infotainment improved substantially with MyLink updates.
2022–2023 (5th gen, stabilized)The rocky 2021 launch settled by 2022. If you want the newest platform with the independent rear suspension upgrade, these later years are meaningfully better than 2021.
Years to think twice about
2021 (5th gen launch)The redesigned Tahoe had a troubled launch — electrical complaints, transmission issues, and general first-year quality concerns. The independent rear suspension is a genuine improvement but the execution in 2021 was below GM's usual standard.
2007–2010 (3rd gen, high mileage)At this age, AFM lifter failures are common on high-mileage examples. Inspect carefully.

Common problems to know
AFM lifter failure (5.3L V8, high mileage): Same issue as the Silverado. Listen for ticking at idle on cold start.
Air conditioning (multiple years): The Tahoe's large cabin stresses the AC system. Failures are more common than on smaller vehicles.
Electrical (2021): First-year redesign brought more electronic complaints than later years.
Bottom line
A 2015–2019 Tahoe with the 5.3L V8 and documented service history is the safest used Tahoe buy. Budget for AFM lifter work on any high-mileage example and avoid the 2021 launch year.
