2020–2024 (4th gen, new engine)The 4th generation Sorento introduced new engine families (2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.5L Smartstream, hybrid) that are not affected by the Theta II recall. These are the safe years to buy.

Bottom line

Buy a 2020 or newer Sorento and the engine recall isn't a concern. Any 2015–2018 Sorento needs a VIN check and documented recall completion before you consider it.
